Los Angeles — The economic recovery is  under way led by increased international trade  and growth in the high-tech sector,  entertainment and tourism, according to  the 2011-2012 Economic Forecast and  Industry Outlook report released today by  the Kyser Center for Economic Research at  the Los Angeles County Economic Development  Corporation (LAEDC).

The Los Angeles economy “appears to be past the bottom of the recession and is starting up the recovery path during 2011 and 2012,” said LAEDC Chief Economist Nancy D. Sidhu, Ph.D. “Many industries are back in the black and employment is rising in some areas.”

Imports and exports have rebounded around the world. Increased international trade activity in 2011 will benefit the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which both posted strong years in 2010.

Hiring is also expected to  grow as well for the region’s  tourism and entertainment  sectors as a result of  increased filming and more    visitors to the region,  helped by the new  convention center hotel at  L.A. LIVE.

However, there is little likelihood the housing sector will escape another difficult year, even though 2011 is expected to bring some improvement. Housing activity will only see incremental improvement even though it has improved from the 2009 lows.

California, which had the second highest unemployment rate in the country in 2010 at 12.5 percent, will see employment growth in 2011. However, much like the national picture, California’s jobless rate will remain relatively high, with the LAEDC forecasting an average unemployment rate of 12.1 percent this year and the rate coming down to 11.5 percent by next year.

“We project that the California and U.S. economies will grow moderately in 2011 and 2012,” said Sidhu. “But the recession was so deep, 2011 won’t feel all that good despite improvements in most industries. However, the state is headed in the right direction, and the economy will seem even better by 2012.”

Growing Together report highlights L.A. County’s personal and economic ties with Japan

 

The LAEDC also released a separate, new report, “Growing Together – Japan and Los Angeles County”. The report describes many of the close ties that have developed between Los Angeles County and Japan, the number one source of foreign direct investment into L.A. County.

U.S. – Japan trade has increased dramatically over the past 50 years jumping from $3.2 billion to $211 billion at its peak in 2000. Japan is the second largest trading partner of the Los Angeles Customs District with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together handling nearly 25 percent of total trade between Japan and the U.S.

The report also documents the growing importance of foreign direct investment in this relationship, reviewing both investments made by Los Angeles area business firms in Japan and Japanese investments in Los Angeles County.

To discuss their investments made in the region, the LAEDC’s Economic Forecast event held at the Los Angeles Marriott on Feb. 16 features a panel of speakers from well-known Japanese companies. Representatives from Honda Motors, Union Bank and Yakult, makers of probiotic beverages, will discuss the significant impact of Japanese companies on the L.A. County economy.

Indie Trailblazer of the Year Award

Los Angeles, CA – Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles announced today that “Everything Will Happen Before You Die,” a hilarious romp through the underbelly of L.A.’s boho subculture, will be presented as the 2010 festival’s Centerpiece Gala premiere film, Saturday, Sept. 11th, 7:30 pm at the new 400-seat Civic Center F. Deaton Auditorium, at corner of 1st and Main St., across from City Hall in downtown L.A.

The presentation marks the world premiere of the film directed by Dan Finkel and written by Finkel and Brian McGuire. The film stars McGuire and Bret Roberts. Bruce Dickson is the director of photography.

That evening during the Centerpiece program, actor John Hawkes will be honored with the festival’s Indie Trailblazer of the Year Award, for his body of work in 2010. In addition to appearing in “Everything Will Happen Before You Die,” Hawkes also appears in “On Holiday,” another feature screening premiering at the festival earlier that afternoon. Earlier this year, Hawkes received critical acclaim for his starring role in “Winter’s Bone,” which debuted at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and went on to nationwide commercial release. Hawkes also has appeared in the feature releases “The Perfect Storm,” “Wristcutters: A Love Story” and “Me and You and Everyone We Know” as well as TV’s “Deadwood& quot; and “Lost.”

In “Everything Will Happen Before You Die,” Edgar (Brian McGuire) finally has got his shit together. After years of riding the party train, he has finally stepped off and is living the nerdy, hipster dream. He has his own on-line fabric company where he designs controversial T-shirts, and has a new beautiful Kenyan girlfriend whom he’s marrying at the end of the day (ok, for her immigration status). He’s right on track with his new life when an unexpected visitor from the past sets him on a new (old) course. Doran (Brett Roberts), a Russian expat who has his own private cabin on life’s party train, insists that he gives his best friend an all-day bachelor adventure. Next stop: chaos! Their friendship is tested as they must square off with a low-re nt Russian mobster and embark on a spiritual quest that brings them in contact with a motley crew of characters from L.A.’s self-professed bohemian underbelly.

Los Angeles A measured economic recovery is underway in the nation, the state and Southern California, according to the 2010-2011“Economic Forecast & Industry Outlook” report released today by the Kyser Center for Economic Research at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

In California, three sectors will see employment growth during 2010: information, private education and health services.  Like the national experience, unemployment rates in the state will remain high with the LAEDC forecasting a 12.3 percent average rate in 2010, easing down to 11.9 percent in 2011.

“We project that the U.S. economy will grow by 2.6 percent in 2010 and by 3.1 percent in 2011, after plunging by 2.4 percent during 2009,” said Nancy D. Sidhu, Ph.D., the LAEDC’s chief economist.  “However, unemployment rates in the U.S. will remain uncomfortably high, averaging 9.9 percent in 2010 and 9.4 percent in 2011.”

Sidhu observed that consumer spending holds one of the keys to the economic recovery, with inflation-adjusted gains of 1.9 percent in 2010 and 2.7 percent in 2011 forecast, after falling by 0.6 percent in 2009.

“California’s economy is also on the recovery track, but the state will still lose 121,800 jobs in 2010,” said Sidhu.  “However, this will be a huge improvement from the 668,200 jobs lost in 2009.”  California’s housing industry will see a modest recovery in 2010, according to Sidhu. LAEDC’s Entertainment Report Sees Modest Increasein Industry Employment, Another Strong Year at Box Office

Despite a boost from California’s film incentive program, runaway TV/film production remains a significant threat

Los Angeles, CA —  A new study released today by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s (LAEDC) Kyser Center for Economic Research predicts a modest increase in industry employment in 2010.   The report also forecasts another strong year at the box office, no foreseeable labor issues, and a boost in production from California’s film incentive program.

Other pluses include NBC’s programming of scripted series in the 10:00 p.m. primetime spot being vacated by Jay Leno and the ongoing investment in the entertainment industry’s infrastructure such as NBC Universal’s Evolution Project and the Disney/ABC Studios at the Ranch. However, key issues include changes in the business model, with an intense focus on costs.  Run-away production remains a significant threat and changing technology, distribution, exhibition and marketing models are noted.

The media industry will continue to struggle, reflecting a slow rebound in advertising and changes in the way consumers access information.

The LAEDC study recommends a renewed focus on entertainment as a serious business because it is a high-wage, high-multiplier activity.  The study cited efforts by the cities of Los Angeles and Santa Clarita to become more “film-friendly.”  It also recommends watching the state’s film incentive plan that has helped boost employment in this sector.

“The coming changes in how the industry operates also need to be monitored,” said LAEDC  Founding Economist Jack Kyser.  “At the end of the day, content is still king and leaders need to be alert so that much of it is still produced in the County.”

West Hollywood, CA – Several hundred mostly Los Angeles Times writers, editors and staffers from LAT packed into a launched party on the top floor of a swank West Hollywood Hotel to launched theenvelope.com and awards season coverage.

“When we launched the Envelope a couple of years ago, we didn’t have as much video, we didn’t have as much breaking news and mainly covered Hollywood events and film festivals with all the guilds,” said Associate Editor Patrick Kevin Day. “We now have a lot more voices and videos.”

TheEnvelope.com, which is billed as the “ultimate awards site,” has helped the Los Angeles Times to significantly broaden its coverage of the entertainment business over the past year,” according to Film Critic Betsy Sharkey, formerly the editor.

The new editor is Sally Hofmeister, who introduced additional writers and staffers at this week’s (10-05-09) launch party.

The Envelope’s purpose, according to promotional materials, is to raise awareness of award contenders, drive box office numbers, boost DVD sales, influence voting considerations of Academy and guild members and target consumers.

The Envelope receives five million visitors during the off season and much higher numbers during the high season – between November and February. It features interactive photo galleries, video clips of red carpet coverage, celebrity podcasts, blogs and a “Buzzmeter.”

This writer asked Day how new media has impacted coverage in the weekly printed version of Envelope and the Online version.

“I think speed is the biggest thing,” said Day. “We have a host of competition from various websites trying into the entertainment awards area, so we have to keep an eye on them constantly and we can’t fall down at any point and be at the top of our game.”

“Don’t call me,  email works best,  because I work  out of my home  literally blogging  all day,” said  Elizabeth Snead,
(left) contributing  editor of The  Envelope. “I don’t  go to as many  mixers and late  night parties as  before, because  now I have people I can send to them, so just being here is a rare thing for me.

Elizabeth Snead is the former fashion editor and entertainment writer for USA Today prefers “10 days advance notice of story pitches,” since she covers three events a night. “I might not get back to you right away, but I do read my emails,” she said.

For almost two years now, Snead has been writing for thehttp://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag blog. She focuses on news, celebs, awards, politics and pop culture.

A tip: don’t pitch a hodge-podge of clients to The Envelope. “We’re looking for a window into the lifestyle of a person so exclusives are given much more consideration,” said Snead.

The LAT re-launched The Envelope to make it “more accessible to our users and the industry,” said its former senior producer Joseph Kapsch.  He is now a producer of the Zap2it.com site of entertainment videos.

The site is broken down into sections on awards and includes photos, features and anything to do with the awards show in the subsections.

For example there are sections with videos and celebrity images on VH1’s Hip Hop Honors, 2009 ‘VH1 Divas’ Arrivals, 2009 Latin Grammy Awards Nominees, 2009 ALMA Awards Arrivals and Red Carpet Rewind: 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards.

“There is Academy news and breaking news on the site. We’ve created these multimedia models on each page for photos. We also host podcasts of nominees or anyone associated with the awards show,” said Kapsch, who is now working for Zap2.it.com, as editorial director.

Kapsch was the former managing editor of AccessHollywood.com, as well as a producer of TV sites at ABC, NBC, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment and Viacom.

One of the most spectacular highlights of the launch party was being on the top floor of the West Hollywood hotel, where you could see for miles 360 degrees, which was awesome at night. And the swimming pool was lit up with the words THE ENVELOPE.CO Los Angeles Times. President Aida Mayo, MayoCommunications. comfound it also a nice classy touch. Food was good, LAT was friendly, and we saw quite a few Entertainment Publicists Professional Society (EPPS) members at theenvelope.com launch party.

Lisa Fung has been named Online arts & entertainment editor for the Los Angeles Times.

An L.A. Times veteran, Fung has been with the paper for more than 20 years and has overseen its arts and culture coverage for the past nine, including classical music, dance, opera, theater and architecture. In her time at the newspaper she also helped launch the national edition, and worked in Metro and Business before joining the Calendar staff in 2000.

In this expanded role, she will oversee the paper’s multimedia coverage of all arts and entertainment, including Calendar, The Envelope and Company Town, as well as more than a dozen latimes.com blogs, according to an L.A. Times report.

 “The Americans on D-Day” is a compact and concise examination of the United States‘ part in the June 6, 1945, Allied invasion of Normandy. 

 Considering the enormity of the actual D-Day undertaking it might sound hopeless to present a comprehensive account in a film with a running time of 44 minutes, but producer-director Richard Lanni has come up with a well organized documentary that provides a clear outline of the events of D-Day, punctuated along the way with somewhat more detailed accounts of specific moments in the battle that turned the tide of World War II in Europe.

  The film benefits immensely from the presence of Ellwood von Seibold as host-narrator-tour guide. Donning authentic military uniform and accessories – down to the “pineapple” style hand grenade hanging from his utility webbing – von Seibold shares a wealth of knowledge on the subject, presenting it with an elegance that provides an effective counterpoint to the brutality that is, after all, at the center of the D-Day story.

  “The Americans on D-Day” strikes a tone appropriate to the nature of D-Day, offering a matter-of-fact account that acknowledges the powerful emotional component of its subject matter while stopping short of romanticizing or idealizing an event that was as bloody and brutal as it was essential to the Allies’ success inEurope. 

  The production deftly blends archival footage and stills with contemporary footage. Early on, we see black-and-white images of U.S. forces, including Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower – as we hear audio of Ike’s sendoff to the D-Day forces. 

  “You are about to embark upon a great crusade,” he tells them. “The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. You will bring about the destruction of the German war machine.

  “We will accept nothing less than full victory”

  The film then goes on to function as a battlefield tour, offering close-ups of German fortifications along the beaches of Normandy, arms – including the MG-42, a heavy machine gun that could fired upwards of 1,200 rounds per minute – and bridges and structures that played key roles in the Allie invasion.

  Interviews with both U.S. and German veterans of the operation provide further personal insight into the significance of D-Day and its human toll.

  Many of the images presented in “The Americans on D-Day” will be familiar to those who have seen the feature film “Saving Private Ryan,” the TV miniseries “Band of Brothers,” or any number of other filmed projects that touch on D-Day.

  The DVD package has extras including the film’s trailer, a making-of feature, a segment on weapons training, another on uniforms and a collection of stills.

WW2-Reflections, a division of Labyrinth Media & Publishing Ltd. of Dublin, Ireland is looking for a theater in Hollywood and elsewhere to premiere film free to all American Legions in USA

“I grew up in the early 1950’s, and I have always been fascinated by the second World War,” said Ellwood von Seibold, battlefield guide of Americans on D-Day, the first battlefield tour film of WW2-Reflections, a division of Labyrinth Media & Publishing Ltd. of Dublin, Ireland. Labyrinth specializes in WW2 battlefield tour DVDs for the U.S. market. “The Americans on D-Day” coincides with the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy invasion.

“D-Day became a focus point of my interest, and I decided to live a dream and move to France and take people all around these areas,” explained Seibold. “And the producer and director of

WW2-Reflections said ‘why don’t we put one of your tours on film in Normandy‘.”

Seibold noted that WW2-Reflections had assembled a remarkable and accurate collection of soldier’s testimony, stories and witnesses who survived one of America‘s most bloody battles in war history. Seibold, donning American and sometimes German uniforms, hops into an early model Army Jeep much like General George Patton rode in shows you what brave soliders endured.

The film uses smart graphics and extensive use of veterans’ recollections, as well as invaluable assistance from Dale Dye, a retired U.S. Marine captain who founded Warriors, Inc. – which specializes in training actors for war-themed film and television productions. Dye was in France researching an upcoming film project and worked with Siebold on historical accuracy. “We are thrilled that he has supported this tour film,” Producer Richard Lanni said.

The production crew shot its first interview in 2007 with Howard Manoian, a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne who landed in Normandy on D-Day and returned many years later to live in the country that he helped liberate.

“With the addition of archive footage and stills we have turned this interview into a short biographical documentary under the title of ‘A Soldier’s Journey,’ which we also hope to launch for the 65th anniversary,” Lanni said.

Manoian was recently named a recipient of the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government. He will be presented with the award in June at St. Mere Eglise, where U.S. paratroopers suffered heavy losses during the Normandy invasion.
